Black Gold Kai Club Funding Success

Black Gold Kai Club has been granted funding from Clutha District Creative Communities to assist with the cost of their Day With a Designer on the 21st of April 2012.

This workshop is all about starting off ideas and skills for wearable art entries.
Over the course of 6-7 hours, participants will learn about design fundamentals and practical construction skills to help them create 3-D works of art.
In order to keep art and art creation accessible, the workshop focuses on the use and re-use of found
objects, rather than specialist artists’ materials.
Black Gold Kai Club has also been granted funding from the Ministry of Youth Development Youth Fund to assist with the Black Gold Kai Club Matariki Recyclable Art Competition on June 23rd 2012.
Highly Flammable will be providing Costumed Characters and Pyrotechnics on the night. We will also have Kapa Haka groups preforming throughout the night.

Black Gold Kai Club "Off Your Trolley' Derby 2011

A wet start to the day did not deter the brave competitors in the Black Gold Kai Club "Off Your Trolley" Derby.
13 competitors raced for the King of the Hill Trophy.
The eventual winner with a time of 1min.37sec was Reece Anderson of Kaitangata.
The Nippers section (short course) with three competing, was won by Lucas Anderson (29secs), Zoomers -Camden Jacobs (1min 42 sec), Sprinters-Reece Anderson (1min 37 sec), Rockets-Jordan Deans (1 min 43 sec)
The judges Hamish Anderson-Clutha District Council Deputy Mayor and Dean Bond Kaitangata Bob Scott Memorial Hill Climb competitor and Catlins Rally winner had a difficult job looking through the mud to find the Best Presented Trolley and Driver, the winner was Logan Morrell and the Most Original Trolley-won by Kobi Oliver.

Black Gold Kai Club Win Education & Child Youth Development category at the Clutha District TrustPower Community Awards 2011

Black Gold Kai Club is the winner of the Education & Child Youth Development category at the Clutha District TrustPower Community Awards 2011

This group highly impressed the judges in their efforts to empower Youth in the Clutha District. The number of their achievements in the last few years runs high and they have been very busy assisting with projects left right and centre.
With an aim to build leadership skills and raise the profile of youth leadership through increased social participation in partnership with the community this group have organised and staged many Youth orientated events.
A part of the success of these projects is the Youth participation including organising, planning, and putting the plans into action.
With over 63 volunteers the list of events this group have been involved in stretches wide and far but some of these include: Black Gold Kai Club Youth Forum, Matariki celebrations, Supporting Kaitangata Bob Scott Memorial Hill Climb, as well as the hotly contested "Off Your Trolley" Derby.
On top of this there have been fundraisers for the Pike River Mine disaster and the Christchurch Earthquake.
Having recently been granted one year's free use of the Kaitangata War Memorial Hall....its a wonder what more this group can achieve...Congratulations!

Black Gold "Off Your Trolley" Derby-3rd October 2010

The third Black Gold "Off Your Trolley" Derby was held on 3.10.10.

An awesome day at City Forests Whites Road brought out the competitors and spectators. The few downpours we had made the track more interesting, adding the slide factor and mud!
The 24 competitors aged from 4 years to 56 years, were racing for the ultimate prize –the “King of the Hill” Trophy. The King of the Hill record was broken with the overall fastest run of the day made by Guy Wilson of Dunedin with a time of 1 minute 25 seconds, 4 seconds faster than April’s fastest time.
Judges –Duncan McCrostie (Kaitangata Bob Scott Memorial Hill Climb Champion) and Hamish Anderson (Clutha District Deputy Mayor) had the very difficult task of choosing the Most Original Trolley, won by Cody Murdoch and the Best Presented Driver and Trolley, won by Camden Jacobs.
Other winners: Nippers-Kori McDonald (2 to 7 years) (Nippers race a short course.) Zoomers-Logan Morrell (8 to 12 years) Sprinters-Callum Deans (13 to 15 years) Rockets-Guy Wilson (16 years plus)

Tanya Grant of the Balclutha Police, spent the day recording the racers speed with a Laser gun-the fastest speed of the day was recorded by Mike Jenson 67kph

Trust Power Clutha District Community Awards 2010

Kaitangata and Districts Community Inc won their section –Sport & Leisure-at the TrustPower Clutha District Community Awards 2010

This group is incredible, and their list of achievements seems to grow every year!

With their pool of 300 volunteers, they aim to establish events, projects and groups to raise the positive profile of Kaitangata, and to ensure residents and visitors are given the opportunity to participate in their community.

This year they have added a number of events to their already long list of activities.

They now have the Black Gold “Off Your Trolley” Derby, the Matariki concert and regular fortnightly and school holiday sessions for children.

They staged a Fear Factor session for Youth Week, and a Fear Factor Disco. They held a Black Gold Kai Club Boys Camp Out for youth aged 10 to 17 years, and a girls night for young ladies aged 10 to 17.

The Black Gold Kai Club participated in this year’s ANZAC service, and added a new friendly run or walk event at Lake Tuakitoto. They also now have the Kaitangata Black Gold Bush Bash.

They still organize their popular Black Gold Trail Mountainbike Event and BMX track facility, as well as the Kaitangata Bob Scott Memorial Hill Climb.

And that is just a very basic overview of some of their activities. All of these activities require a huge number of volunteers to make them happen, something this group does not appear to have a shortage of! I think this in itself is testament to a job very well done!

Black Gold Kai Club celebrated Matariki (Maori New Year) with a concert on Monday the 14th of June.
Performances by: Black Gold Kai Club-"Black & Gold" dance item, Kaitangata Playcentre- "Twinkle Little Star" & Kaitangata Primary School Kapa Haka Group- telling the story of Matariki, entertained an audience of around 70 .

McCROSTIE WINS SECOND BLUFF HILLCLIMB

Duncan McCrostie of Kaitangata retained the title he won last year when he took victory in the Bay View Hotel / Pub Charity Bluff "where the journey begins" Sealed Hillclimb on Saturday 7TH MARCH 2009.

McCrostie repeatedly laid down the fastest times throughout the day in his Mitsubishi EVO, bettering his mark on every run to record a time of 1 minute 00.733 seconds on the final attempt. McCrostie already held the record for the hill but this year's course featured several changes so he can now claim the record for the new course as well.

McCrostie was happy with the win which also gave him the Southern Twin Peaks Challenge title for the second consecutive year. That title is presented to the driver who records the fastest combined time from both the Kaitangata Promotions Bob Scott Memorial Hillclimb held last October as well as Saturday's event.

"It's all good," said McCrostie at the conclusion of the event. He acknowledged a rear spring change had made the car better this year and said the onIy real problem was light rain that affected the second run for most of the competitors.

The 2007 champion and last year's runner-up, Glenn Frew of Outram, was second again this year in his Mitsubishi EVO. Frew spent the entire day in second place and saved his best run until last when he recorded a time of 1 minute 01.176 seconds. However he could not quite head McCrostie off. Tim Cook of Christchurch, runner-up in the National Hillclimb Championship and a former National Junior Clubsport Champion, was third in his Mitsubishi EVO in his first appearance at the event with a time of 1 minute 03.672.

Winton driver Brent Cross was fourth in 1 minute 05.063 seconds with Dave Wilson of Ashburton fifth in a Toyota Celica GT4 and Gore driver Andrew Graves next in his Mitsubishi EVO.

The top ten was rounded out by Gordon Beeby of Timaru, Phil Winter of Dunedin, Mosgiel's Chris Hey in the first two-wheel-drive car home and Quentin Doig of Dunedin. Several other good performances were recorded, including that of Winton driver Darryl Batt who had his Subaru RX Sti in the top ten until the final run.

Competition was also exciting in the various class battles. Hey won Class C for 2 wheel-drive cars of 1601cc and over in his Nissan powered, turbocharged Toyota MR2 ahead of Murray Marshall of Kaitangata in a Nissan Bluebird Turbo and Invercargill's Chris Lange in a Ford Fiesta ST150. Carter Strang of Wallacetown near Invercargill took Class B in his Toyota Levin from Craig Cormack of Gore in a similar car. Jeremy Dawson of Invercargill was third in a Toyota Starlet. Paul Goatley of Balclutha took Class A from Gore's Kevin Laird in a Suzuki Swift while Laird's father, Roger Laird, used the same car to grab third in the class.

As the first three placegetters are not eligible for class prizes Class D for 4-wheel-drive vehicles went to Brent Cross from Dave Wilson and Graves.

McCrostie received $500 for winning the Southern Twin Peaks Challenge while the Class winners in the Challenge - Chris Hey, Carter Strang and Kevin Laird each won $100.

The hillclimb utilises the road to the summit of Bluff Hill (Motu Pohue), a road that climbs to a height of 264 metres above sea level. The cars now start in Pearce Street and encounter a tight right-hander just metres after the start. They then climb through a steep twisty section before a long uphill straight interrupted by two chicanes. That section is followed by another steep, twisty section of road that takes the cars to the finish line.

Changes to the course met with wide approval. A new corner at the bottom of the hill created a great new spectator area while the reconfigured chicanes met with approval from the drivers.

Forty-seven entries contested the hillclimb, a record for the event.

The Bay View Hotel/Pub Charity Bluff "where the journey begins" Sealed Hillclimb is a joint project between Bluff Promotions, the Eastern Southland Car Club and the Southland Sports Car Club. It forms a part of both the Southland Sport Car Club's Speed Championship and the Eastern Southland Car Club's Club Championship.
