The Kaitangata and Districts Community Development Programme objective for youth is to increase social participation and build leadership skills by supporting young people whenever possible to do it for themselves.
Youth of Kaitangata and Districts met in October 2006 and identified that a top priority for them was a wish to have a BMX track.
Since then community team work has enabled the establishment of an awesome facility not only for Kaitangata but the whole Clutha District.

The Black Gold BMX Track was officially opened by Pete Hodgson MP on Saturday September the 13th 2008
The official format of the opening was written and presented by some of the young bmx members. Below is part of the official opening

MURPHY PEOPLES—For a long time the young people of Kaitangata have wanted a BMX track so it was very exciting when Dallas and Jean asked us to come to a meeting to find out what young people wanted in Kai. Top of our list was a bmx track. So we decided to build one.

ALLAN BARNETT—So if we wanted a bmx track we had to start doing it for ourselves. We had to find somewhere to build it, Clutha District Council and Kaitangata & Districts Community helped us with this by giving us the land. We met weekly and did a lot of planning to design the track. I had to phone Murray Nyhon and make a time for us to meet with him. We all biked along to see Murray, Aaron the digger driver was there and they said they would help us.

SEAN SELL—To help us get the feel of what it was going to be like, Dallas and Jean took us to the Dunedin bmx track………this helped us know what our track could be like.

RENEE UREN—In February 2007 work began, for a whole week Nyhons Transport, Stewart Morrison, Dean Storer Evan Dick and Murray Nyhon carted yellow gravel from Kai Point Coal opencast mine. All this time Aaron followed Dallas’s instructions to shape the track.

Since then many, many people have given us materials and done a lot of work on the track. Many others have bought raffle tickets and sausages when we have been fundraising. We thank you from the bottom of our hearts!
